EU Recycling Targets Approved

In April and after almost three years of negotiations the European Council formally agreed a package of new rules for waste management and legally binding recycling targets.

The package means that member states’ targets for the recycling of municipal waste will be 55% by 2025, 60% by 2030 and 65% by 2035. Prime Minister, Theresa May, has said the UK will transpose existing EU law intro UK law after Brexit prior to any subsequent change.

The package include the following targets:

Wales of course will try to set higher standards as indicated by the Environment Minister for Wales, Hannah Blythyn, at the recent CIWM Resource Conference Cymru held in March.  There she commited further funding to support the goal of zero waste by 2050 but also indicated the possiblilty of moving the potential target for councils to recycle 80% of municipal waste by 2035.
